In Belgien wird am Freitag, dem 9. Oktober in Brüssel eine Sitzung und eine Demonstration stattfinden (am ‚Tour &amp; Taxis' in der nähe des Brüsseler Nordbahnhofs). An dieser Veranstaltung werden mindestens 2.000 aktive Gewerkschafter teilnehmen. Die Aktivitäten werden von den beiden größten Verbänden ACV-CSC und ABVV-FGTB unter dem Motto „menschenwürdige Arbeit gegen die Krise&quot; organisiert. Die beiden Gewerkschaften werden der belgischen Regierung ihre Prioritäten darlegen.

BELGIEN

BRAZIL: When the employers' side began to make excuses during the annual round of negotiations on pay, metalworkers organised rallies, protests and demonstrations. This struggle by IMF affiliates CNM and CNTM has resulted in major gains for metalworkers.After a series of demonstrations and protests by workers, FEM-CUT/SP, affiliated to CNM/CUT, negotiated major gains for the 53,000 metalworkers employed by Volkswagen, Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Toyota and Honda in Sao Bernardo and Taubate. Employers agreed to a 6.53 per cent pay rise and agreed to pay an additional R$2,800 (US$1570) bonus. The 6.53 per cent takes account of the annual inflation rate of 4.44 per cent, based on the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) and includes a real increase of 2 per cent. The agreement also included a series of social benefits.Meanwhile, 6,000 metalworkers at Renault-Nissan and Volvo, affiliated to CNTM/FS unions, won the biggest pay rise in the country's manufacturing sector this year, according to the trade union research institute DIEESE. They won a real increase of 3% plus the 4.44 inflation rate, totalling 7.57 per cent, and a bonus payment of R$2,000 (US$ 1,110) for each worker. &quot;The pay rise won by the Curitiba Metalworkers' Union for Renault and Volvo workers is important and will have a positive influence on other negotiations that are scheduled to take place over the next six months&quot; said Miguel Torres, president of the São Paulo and Mogi das Cruzes Metalworkers' Union and vice president of Força Sindical.Valter Sanches, CNM General Secretary, said that the agreement in the auto sector &quot;is a major victory after a year in which Brazil, especially the metalworking sector, was affected by the international crisis. The sector has lost approximately 210,000 jobs since October 2008, after a gain of 700,000 since 2003.&quot; Sanches said that at the beginning of the year, metalworkers took the lead in negotiations with employers and the government about how to deal with the crisis and avoid job losses.

The FEM-CUT/SP, affiliated to CNM/CUT, and the Greater Curitiba Metalworkers' Union, affiliated to the CNTM/FS, have won a pay rise that will have a positive influence on other negotiations in the sector.

Brazilian metalworkers win major gains in annual pay round

CHILE: On Tuesday 6 October, during a bus journey from Santiago to Antofagasta, our Colombian comrade Jesús Albeiro Martinez Catrillón suffered a heart attack that unfortunately cost him his life at the age of 49. Albeiro had lived in Chile for the last five years after leaving Colombia with the help of the Catholic Church after receiving death threats because of his trade union work. The IMF provided assistance to protect his life and that of his family, through an IF Metal and LO-CO humanitarian aid fund. Affiliated organisations in Chile also provided him with their support. Albeiro worked with CONSTRAMET on important projects, especially involving the training of trade union leaders. More recently, and thanks to the efforts of our affiliate SINAMI, he was working in a company that provides services to Codelco, at Sierra Gorda. Albeiro had a distinguished trade union career in Colombia. He was president of the Fredonia  Municipal Workers Union (Sindicato de Trabajadores Oficiales Administración del Municipio de Fredonia), in Antioquia and president of SINTRASEMA CENTRAL. He actively promoted the unity of the working class through UTRAN, FUTRAN and then the Antioquia section of CUT. In 1996, he was the leader of SINTRASEMA when it joined the IMF affiliate UTRAMMICOL, where he took on major responsibilities as leader of the union executive committee and where he served the union with distinction. He was persecuted because of his trade union activities and spent one year (2003) in the United States as part of a programme to protect trade union leaders before emigrating to  Santiago, Chile with the help of Catholic Action. The IMF Latin American and Caribbean Regional Office regrets the loss of Albeiro Martinez, who fought for trade unionism and who, despite being forced to live a long way from his country, his family and his traditions, settled in Chile, where he continued working to promote the rights of workers, the right to freedom of association and the welfare of his family.All of us in the IMF offer our condolences to his family and to the trade union movement in the region.

The Colombian trade union leader Albeiro Martinez has died from a heart attack at the age of 49. He lived his last five years in Chile in order to protect his life and that of his family after receiving death threats because of his trade union work in Colombia.

Trade unionism in mourning

&#160;Den 7 oktober kommer det att anordnas möten på företagen och plakatdemonstrationer på allmänna platser. Tack vare IMF-förbundens initiativ har Rysslands största fackliga huvudorganisation FNPR lagt till paroller om otryggt arbete i uppsättningen som används i den globala kampanjen för anständigt arbete. Massmedia kommer att bjudas in till och uppmanas att sända från den ryska fackliga manifestationen. IMFs regionkontor har tillsammans med IUL, den ryska huvudorganisationen VKT, Skolan för arbetardemokrati och Centret för sociala rättigheter och arbetarrättigheter bildat en kommitté som skall organisera en konferens för OSS-länderna om otryggt arbete och om erfarenheter av att bekämpa det. Den skall äga rum i slutet av november.

&#160;Nell'ambito delle attività allestite per la Giornata mondiale sul lavoro dignitoso, il CNM/CUT, parteciperà, assieme ad altri sindacati e centrali sindacali, alla Marcia dei lavoratori a Brasilia il 7 ottobre.Le rivendicazioni della Marcia dei lavoratori saranno:•·   Riduzione dell'orario di lavoro senza riduzione delle remunerazioni;•·   Salario minimo;•·   Convenzioni OIL 151 e 158;•·   Approvazione della PEC 438 contro il lavoro forzato;•·   Abolizione immediata del PL 4302/98 e PL 4330/04 sul subappalto.

BRASILE

1. CGT-FO CGT FO will be holding an International Conference on the 7 October 2009 as part of their National Confederation Committee, which will focus on discussions with foreign unionists about the Economic crisis and International Union Action.   On the 7 October FO will also be preparing for their National Conference that meets end of October. The goal of this conference is to coordinate and reinforce union intervention for the defence of employee rights in the face of the economic crisis. 2.  On 7 October as part of a joint strategy five French IMF affiliates CFDT, &quot;Force Ouvrière&quot; de la Métallurgie - FO, FGMM-CFDT, CGT, CFTC and CFE-CGC, together with FSU, Solidaires and UNSA are going to hold in common meetings, rallies, gatherings and press conferences, industrial actions, debates and meetings with union officials all over France.

FRANCE

Der Metallgewerkschaftsbund in Montenegro druckt eine serbische Version des Posters und der Broschüre und wird diese an die Mitglieder verteilen (vielleicht mit einem Begleitschreiben). Zudem wird anlässlich der Kampagne eine Pressekonferenz organisiert und das Informationsmaterial den Medien vorgestellt. Da der 7. Oktober der Welttag für menschenwürdige Arbeit ist, wird unser Dachverband an diesem Tag etwas organisieren. Die Metallgewerkschaft wird zudem die globale Kampagne des IMB vorstellen.

MONTENEGRO

SWEDEN: Executive Committee members of the International Metalworkers' Federation met in Gothenburg on 21 May to discuss building closer cooperation with Global Union Federations and proposed candidates to lead the IMF for the next four years. Proposed rule changes, if adopted by Congress delegates on 25 May, will allow for the election of one or more IMF Assistant General Secretaries as well as IMF Vice-President. Elections will also be held on Monday for the position of IMF President and IMF General Secretary. Committee members discussed concrete steps for closer cooperation and coordination with Global Union Federations and all agreed such measures should be taken up by the new IMF leadership as a priority of future work.Three unions were unanimously approved for affiliation to the IMF: the Vietnam National Union of Workers in Industry and Trade (VUIT) with a membership of 40,597; the Metals Industry Committee of Industrial Union of Serbia (ISS) representing 7,000 members; and the Mining and metallurgy Trade Union of Kyrgyzstan (MMTUK) representing 7,200 workers.Marcello Malentacchi, IMF general secretary, delivered the secretariat report noting the many current struggles metalworkers are engaged in as Congress opens on Sunday and the need for strengthening our solidarity efforts in defence of labour rights around the world.

Executive Committee members met in Gothenburg to discuss future cooperation with Global Union Federations and put forward candidates to be elected by the IMF Congress delegates on Monday.

IMF Executive proposes candidates for Congress 2009 elections

Since the IMF Congress in 2005, metalworkers and the whole trade union movement have been confronted with an increasingly hostile political, economic and social environment. Corporations have led globalisation to maximise the global reach and profits of their operations with the support of governments and international institutions by promoting neo-liberal policies, which feature deregulation of capital and labour markets, privatization of public services and assets, a reduction in employment growth in many regions, an erosion of social security systems and the frequent denial of worker and human rights.  Even today, a large proportion of the world's metalworkers do not enjoy the fundamental right to have a union.While the world economy has grown and created vast amounts of wealth, the divide between rich and poor has widened.  Ever more workers have been faced with deteriorating working and living conditions, job insecurity and an erosion of their rights. Capital has gained huge profits, while the purchasing power of most workers has fallen or at best stagnated.
